The United Way of Johnson County will hold its 2010 Community Campaign Kickoff on Thursday, September 2, 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m., at the Coralville Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. This year's campaign will be led by Chairs, Cyndie and Russ Schmeiser and Co-chair, Tim Krumm. Representatives of United Way's Volunteer Center and 29 partner agencies will have displays and information available in the Coral Ballroom before and after the program. Doors open for this agency fair at 7:00 a.m.

Our fair is known for the draft and pony hitch show that has been going on since 1960 and is still our Friday night show. A Family Fun Day, Figure 8 races, Chuckwagon races, a tractor pull and a free musical show round out the entertainment at the fair. A beef judging event, in addition to horse, pony, sheep and goat judging includes people from a wide area showing their livestock. The grounds and buildings are busy during the summer months, and are available for use by the people of the surrounding area for a wide variety of activities.

Thursday Forum: "This Is No Joke: Taking Humor Seriously." As ubiquitous as humor is to the human experience, it often is not given serious scholarly consideration. Psychology Professor Dan Lehn will explore the experience of humor from a variety of psychological perspectives in the opening series of the 2010-11 Thursday Forum schedule. Thursday Forum lectures are held in Kesler Lecture Hall in Hickok Hall. Each session begins with coffee and pastries from 8:45-9:15 a.m., followed by the class until 11:30 a.m. The class meetings blend lecture, use of media such as film and music, and discussion. Most series conclude with a luncheon on the final Thursday. The courses are open to all adults. The cost is $10 per week or $30 for a four-week course. The closing luncheons cost an additional $8. There is no pre-registration, and seating is almost always available. For more information, call 399-8619.

The Herbert Hoover Presidential Museum opens a new exhibit on April 17, 2010 - Exploring Hoover's Attic: Treasures, Keepsakes, Surprises.

Herbert and Lou Henry Hoover led momentous lives. Although born of humble birth, they traveled the world, shared exceptional adventures, and saved millions of lives. On their journey together, the Hoovers accumulated thousands of treasures, keepsakes and even a few surprises - all in the form of objects and artifacts that are carefully preserved at the Hoover Presidential Museum.

Exploring Hoover's Attic is an unprecedented look at the 'stuff' of history - those items that the Hoover family thought important enough to save - first in their homes, then at the Hoover Institution, and now at the Hoover Museum. The objects are old and new, precious and ordinary, and large and small. They come from around the world and just down the street. Many of the items are gifts of gratitude; and others are items that the Hoover's purchased as mementos.
