Thursday, September 02, 2010 - “This Is No Joke: Taking Humor Seriously.”

Thursday Forum: "This Is No Joke: Taking Humor Seriously." As ubiquitous as humor is to the human experience, it often is not given serious scholarly consideration. Psychology Professor Dan Lehn will explore the experience of humor from a variety of psychological perspectives in the opening series of the 2010-11 Thursday Forum schedule. Thursday Forum lectures are held in Kesler Lecture Hall in Hickok Hall. Each session begins with coffee and pastries from 8:45-9:15 a.m., followed by the class until 11:30 a.m. The class meetings blend lecture, use of media such as film and music, and discussion. Most series conclude with a luncheon on the final Thursday. The courses are open to all adults. The cost is $10 per week or $30 for a four-week course. The closing luncheons cost an additional $8. There is no pre-registration, and seating is almost always available. For more information, call 399-8619.

Although born of humble birth, they traveled the world, shared exceptional adventures, and saved millions of lives. On their journey together, the Hoovers accumulated thousands of treasures, keepsakes and even a few surprises - all in the form of objects and artifacts that are carefully preserved at the Hoover Presidential Museum.

Exploring Hoover's Attic is an unprecedented look at the 'stuff' of history - those items that the Hoover family thought important enough to save - first in their homes, then at the Hoover Institution, and now at the Hoover Museum. The objects are old and new, precious and ordinary, and large and small. They come from around the world and just down the street. Many of the items are gifts of gratitude; and others are items that the Hoover's purchased as mementos.

The Herbert Hoover Presidential Museum is open from 9 - 5 daily and located in West Branch, Iowa, just off Interstate 80 at Exit 254.
Thursday, September 02, 2010 - Ere Ibeji: Yoruba Twin Figures

For over two decades, University of Iowa professor emeritus Richard Simon has collected ere Ibeji, or figures of twins, created by the Yoruba people of southwest Nigeria. These small figures, carved of wood, represent the deceased twins born to Yoruba mothers, who have the highest rate of twin pregnancies in the world. After a twin's death, the ere Ibeji figure is fed, bathed, clothed, and offered the same loving care that Yoruba lavish on living infants and especially on surviving twins. Curated by Christopher Roy, UI professor of Art History and Elizabeth M. Stanley Faculty Fellow of African Art, this exhibition presents the 300 extraordinary examples of ere Ibeji in Simon's collection, providing rare insight into this profound artistic tradition of Yoruba culture.

Christopher Roy will give a gallery talk about the exhibition on September 9 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. in the Black Box Theater of the Iowa Memorial Union.

Images of Twins: ere Ibeji in Yoruba African Culture, a conference held in conjunction with the exhibition, will feature three of the world's experts on ere Ibeji figures: Marilyn Houlberg, John Pemberton, and George Chemeche. The conference will take place on October 8 from 2:00-5:00 p.m.in the Becker Communication Studies Building, Room 101 and will be followed by an all-donor and public reception from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Iowa Memorial Union, North Room.

Seniors with vision loss in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area are invited to attend one of two open houses sponsored by the Iowa Department for the Blind's Independent Living program.

The program is celebrating its 30th year, and wants to connect with community members and service providers who work with people with vision loss and introduce them to the program's services.

Independent Living teachers will be available to demonstrate assistive devices, such as check-writing guides, talking blood pressure monitors and alarm clocks, and tactile board games.

If you know about the Department and want to stop by and say hi (maybe have a piece of cake), or if you just want to learn a little bit more about us, please come to the event!
